Slow Mohs

“Slow Mohs” is a specialized procedure for the removal of lentigo maligna – early melanomas on sun-exposed skin. Slow Mohs is a modified form of Mohs micrographic surgery. Like conventional Mohs, it is a staged, margin-controlled excision. However, in contrast to conventional Mohs sections, which are processed via frozen sectioning and read by the Mohs surgeon while the patient waits in our office, slow Mohs sections are processed via rushed permanent sectioning and read by an off-site pathologist. It may take a few days to receive pathology results from this outside lab. During this time, the patient will go home with a bandage covering his/her wound. Surgical repair of the defect will take place a few days later, as soon as all margins are found to be clear of tumor.
